Chelsea have discovered their opponents for the group stage of the Champions League this season as the Blues start the defence of their European crown next month.

Thomas Tuchel’s side will face Juventus, Zenit St Petersburg and Malmo of Sweden.

The Blues, as defending European Champions, were placed in Pot One for the draw and they were put into Group H to begin as they were the last team to be drawn out by former Blues defender Branislav Ivanovic.

The first team they drew out from a very strong looking Pot Two was Juventus, who were in the same group as the Blues in 2012/13 when Chelsea were Champions League holders.

After that, it was Pot Three and Chelsea drew Zenit St Petersburg, meaning the Blues will travel to the venue of this year’s final in the group stage.

Finally from Pot Four, which is supposed to be the weakest side in the group (though AC Milan were in Pot Four), Chelsea were handed home and away games against Swedish side Malmo.

The Champions League campaign for this season gets underway on September 14 and 15 for Matchday 1.

MD2 arrives on September 28 and 29 before a three-week break, with MD3 taking place on October 19/20.

MD4 is up next and that is set to be played on November 2 and 3 before MD5 a couple of weeks later on November 23/24.

The group stage campaign is rounded off with MD6 on December 7 and 8.

Thomas Tuchel’s side lifted the most prestigious club trophy around back in May when they beat Man City 1-0 in front of 16,000 spectators in Porto, Portugal.

Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game three minutes before half time from a sumptuous Mason Mount pass that saw the German round City keeper Ederson and slot into an empty net

It was the Blues’ second European crown, having last won it back in 2012 on that famous night in Munich when they saw off Bayern in their own backyard on penalties.
