Gareth Southgate has named five London-based players in a 25-man squad for England’s triple-header of World Cup qualifiers which begin next week but there is no place for Arsenal defender Ben White or Chelsea left back Ben Chilwell.

Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold returns having missed the European Championship due to injury, with Jesse Lingard a surprise inclusion in midfield. The Manchester United player, who was cut from the provisional squad for the Euros, appears to have little future at Old Trafford but impressed while on loan at West Ham United last season.

Captain Harry Kane is included 24 hours after he confirmed that he will remain at Tottenham Hotspur beyond the current transfer window, with Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka also named among the forwards. West Ham United’s Declan Rice is included too.

Chelsea pair Reece James and Mason Mount are included, with Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope recalled following injury and Patrick Bamford, of Leeds United, in line for his first cap having been selected instead of Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood.
