Major Chelsea Premier League title prediction made after Man City’s £150m transfer decision

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has predicted that Chelsea will come out on top in this newly-formed open title race after Man City failed to sign Harry Kane.

Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, Romelu Lukaku, Ibrahima Konate, Jack Grealish are some of the signings made by the so-called title challengers for the 2021/22 Premier League crown.

But one transfer that was initially in the pipeline, which would have likely tilted the pendulum in favour of Pep Guardiola’s side, was Kane’s potential switch to the Etihad Stadium.

Initially, the appetite was there from Kane to move on for a new challenge, but Daniel Levy’s reluctance to let go of a player that new manager Nuno Espirito Santo wants to use – coupled with City’s reluctance to spend at least £150million – has resulted in the 28-year-old announcing that he will stay at the club for at least another season in a social media post.

“It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I’ve had in the last few weeks,” he said.

“I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100% focused on helping the team achieve success. #COYS.”

football.london understands that Kane and his representatives held positive talks with both Espirito Santo and Spurs’ managing director of football Fabio Paratici in the weeks after he returned to training.

As a result of the striker’s decision to stay put for another season, Redknapp believes that the title is now up for grabs between the challengers.

“If he (Kane) had gone to Man City then I think they would have been nailed on for the title,” the 74-year-old told talkSPORT, via HITC.

“I think that’s going to have big repercussions with them because I think they are still short of a real frontman. I think it has thrown the title wide open.

“There are four of five teams that can win it this year – I looked at Chelsea last week, they looked fantastic. You have Liverpool back with Van Dijk. Man United are looking stronger. It’s going to be a really open title race.

“If I had to have a bet, and there’s every chance I will, I think Chelsea look dangerous. I can’t see a fault in their team. He [Tuchel] can make changes at right-back and left-back. He left Thiago Silva on the bench last week. They are so full of talent. Now, Lukaku is the icing on the cake.”

Two of the competitors meet at the weekend in what could be a crucial clash in gaining an early advantage in the title race, with Liverpool and Chelsea set to face off at Anfield on Saturday at 5:30pm.

Both teams have maximum points so far in the league, but at least one or even both of those records will have to go.
