Miguel Azeez has arrived at Portsmouth ahead of a loan move that will see him spend the season at Fratton Park football.london understands.
The 18-year-old is one of the most highly rated talents to have come through Arsenal’s Hale End academy and impressed in pre-season with a long-range strike against Watford.
It was expected that after working on his physicality and off the ball skills that he might stay in North London to try and break in to the first team.
But with the lack of Europa League opportunities this season and the amount of midfield options in Kevin Betsy’s under-23 side it has since been decided that it would be best for Azeez to go out on loan to League One where he is guaranteed regular game time football.london understands.
The youngster will now spend the campaign on loan with Pompey, where he will be managed by Danny Cowley who coached Emile Smith Rowe during his loan spell at Huddersfield in 2020.
It is thought that this may have played a part in the deal.
When asked about a potential move for Azeez earlier this month, Cowley revealed he was a fans of the 18-year-old, and that he hoped his good relationship with Arsenal could help seal a move if it came down to it.
“He’s a boy I know, he’s a very good player,” Cowley told HampshisreLive .
“We obviously have a good relationship with Arsenal because of Ems [Emile Smith Rowe].”
However, at the time Cowley went on to dismiss the rumours.
“It’s probably people putting two and two together and getting five,” the former Lincoln boss added.
Mikel Arteta is a fan of Azeez after giving him his senior debut in the Europa League victory over Dundalk last season and including him in the Premier League squad for the victory over Sheffield United, and will be keeping a keen eye on how the 18-year-old gets on.
He is not the only Arsenal academy player expected to leave before the transfer window closes though.
Fellow midfielder Tim Akinola is expected to depart on loan, which could open up a spot for highly rated youngster Charlie Patino to secure a regular place in Betsy’s under-23 side.
Young right back Ryan Alebiosu is also expected to spend the season away from Hale End, with talks over a loan move to Sunderland gathering pace football.london understands.
