William Carvalho’s Arsenal admission as midfielder in talks over Premier League transfer

Former Arsenal target William Carvalho could finally be on his way to the Premier League after it was claimed that the Portugal international is in surprise talks with newcomers Norwich City.

Carvalho has played for Real Betis since July 2018, when he joined the La Liga club from Sporting Lisbon after his involvement for Portugal at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He played twice in the most recent European Championships, but featured more heavily in Portugal’s past success in 2016.

The 29-year-old hasn’t started a La Liga game so far this season under former Manchester City and West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini as a transfer out of Spain now seems inevitable for the ex-Gunners target.

And Sky Sports are now reporting that Daniel Farke’s side are looking for a midfielder partner to young Scotsman Billy Gilmour, who will relish seeing an experienced player like the Euro 2016 winner come in and play alongside himself, and are in talks with Carvalho.

Despite these fresh links to the Canaries, the midfielder has previously made his ideal Premier League destination well known in the past.

“I prefer not to say, but there is a club with which I’ve always empathised – Arsenal,” he told A Bola in 2015, as quoted by the Daily Express.

“Because of a player who was I very fond of, in this case, I wear the number of him: Thierry Henry, a player with whom I always empathised too.

“Maybe this is why I look with more attention to the Premier League.”

Mikel Arteta’s signing of young starlet Albert Sambi Lokonga and Granit Xhaka penning a new deal has meant that a need for a further midfielder addition is not as pressing as it was at the start of the window.

football.london understands that at least two more new signings could be supplied to Arteta before the transfer season ends, with a right-back and striker the two positions where we could see some movement in the next week.

And while one of those won’t be Carvalho, he could still realise a dream of playing at the Emirates – albeit for Norwich if a move materialises.
