Chelsea will only be able to sign Saul Niguez on loan before the transfer window closes if Atletico Madrid can sign his replacement, according to the latest reports.
football.london reported earlier in the window that unless an opportunity that is too good to refuse presented itself to the Blues, a move for a midfielder seemed unlikely.
Diego Simeone has admitted that “a lot of things can happen” before the end of the transfer window, and therefore a transfer for Saul on loan with the option to buy him permanently isn’t entirely out of the picture.
Saul has certainly become an Atleti stalwart under Simeone in recent seasons and he would be a welcomed signing at Stamford Bridge.
Now at the age of 26, he has managed to accumulate 339 appearances for the Spanish giants and more than played his part in the club’s La Liga success last term.
However, as per David Ornstein at the Athletic, the La Liga giants are only prepared to let the Spaniard leave on loan before tomorrow’s 11pm deadline if they can source a suitable replacement before then.
They’re currently struggling to find that new recruit, and consequently, there has been little development on his situation in recent days.
Nevertheless, Thomas Tuchel won’t be too disheartened if Chelsea do end up missing out on signing Saul.
The midfield trio of Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho have been outstanding for the Blues in recent months.
Jorginho and Kante were even awarded UEFA’s most prestigious honours last week, as Kante was named their midfielder of the year, whilst Jorginho won the overall Player of the Year award.
It’ll be interesting to see how this one develops in the coming hours, but for now, at least, there’s still quite a bit to be done.
