The Chelsea transfers Marina Granovskaia should complete as £98m Romelu Lukaku deal confirmed – Daniel Childs

After the club record-breaking deal to re-sign Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan, you would presume most Chelsea fans would be content with the transfer business their club has achieved this summer.

With a day left of the window, the west London club still have a few fringe players to sell or loan – which appears a more pressing matter.

There should be confidence in the Champions League-winning squad under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel to achieve more in the upcoming season. However, Chelsea supporters still have been debating further business to be done before the window closes on Tuesday night.

Here are the names our Fan Brand writers want to see arrive.

Declan Rice – Daniel Childs

Even before allowing Billy Gilmour to leave on loan to Norwich City for the season, the defensive midfield position has been a priority this summer.

With now only three senior midfielders in Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic to effectively cover two positions, Tuchel needs to find a fourth midfielder and the West Ham ace would be perfect. Since the departure of Nemanja Matic in 2017, Chelsea have struggled to find consistent midfield balance in the Premier League which has cost them points. Rice’s excellent ability to break up play, but also surge forward feels like the right fit despite a high fee.

Crediting the excellent analyst Joe Tweedie, Chelsea’s midfield of Kovacic and Jorginho have at times struggled to defend large spaces in central areas – in particular when Kante has been out injured. More than an upgrade, it is purely a numbers concern with the Blues potentially playing over 60 games across six competitions.

Although it appears unlikely this summer, it is a move that feels inevitable as Rice is reportedly turning down contract offers to extend his stay with the Hammers. With his Premier League experience and leadership quality, Rice would be a brilliant move.

Chelsea have targeted West Ham midfielder over the last two summer transfer windows and is reportedly Thomas Tuchel’s top target.

Jules Kounde – Jai Mcintosh

Despite the success of last season and the eventual productivity of the summer transfer window, there are growing concerns surrounding Chelsea’s centre-back options as Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, club captain Cesar Azpilicueta, and Andreas Christensen all have one year left on their contract as of the start of this season.

Therefore, the need to secure the signature of a central defender is becoming an increasingly central point of discussion. The sales of Marc Guehi, Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori have left a somewhat bitter aftertaste in the mouths of fans who saw the three defenders as the future hub of Chelsea’s defence.

It is no secret that Tuchel and the club are interested in Sevilla’s outstanding young French centre-back Jules Kounde, and for good reason. Despite his diminutive stature, Kounde is impressively strong in the air. Couple this with the ease with which he plays long passes and his willingness to use his physicality and you have almost the ideal prototypical Tuchel centre-half. If the club are looking for a long-term replacement for Thiago Silva, Kounde should be top of that list.

Declan Rice – Renuka Odedra

I think it’s been clear for a while that Rice would be a perfect addition to this Chelsea squad as it currently stands.

He’s been through the Chelsea academy and has a history with the club. Not only that, he will bolster what is a scarce choice of midfielders for Tuchel. We all saw what an asset he is to the England national team during the European Championships. Similarly, he could strengthen a Chelsea side that will need reinforcements for a long season ahead.

Aurélien Tchouaméni – Scott Clayton

I feel he’s at the right point in his career where he’s ready for the step up in quality.

He’s done really well in his 18 months at Monaco. Last season he won Ligue 1 Young Player of the year as well as getting into the team of the year.

I’ve seen little hints of him picking up parts of his game from Cesc Fabregas last season. He’s a little more defensively minded than Fabregas but if he could learn from Jorginho, Kovacic and Kante on a daily basis, then I only see it as being beneficial for him.

The luxury with Tchouameni is that he’s still not set in a role and still has the ability to be moulded into a player to play a number of roles. With the swinging door that comes with Chelsea that is a great skill to have in your locker.

Learning and slowly getting introduced this season will be good for him while we still have very able midfielders in our squad.

I worry if one of Jorginho, Kante or Kovacic gets injured as we will be very thin when it comes to options. I want the club to forward-think and look ahead before it’s too late when we are desperate for a new top midfielder.

Getting them settled and eased in slowly rather than encountering a Havertz situation of expecting something from the get-go is preferable.
