Arsenal have had a calamitous start to the season as they have fallen to three consecutive defeats in the Premier League, with the defence being scapegoated as the biggest reason for these failures.
There is a clear imbalance to the full-back positions at the club, with the team being overloaded with a lack of quality.
football.london first revealed back in May that the Gunners wanted to sign a right-back this summer but only if they could offload one of the full-backs from the squad.
With the transfer window drawing to a close and Hector Bellerin’s clear intent to leave the club – Here is who we could see join the North London side before the window closes.
The dream signing: Max Aarons
The perfect right-back signing for Arsenal to sign before the deadline would be Norwich City’s Max Aarons.
21-year-old has been linked with Arsenal in the past but a deal has never managed to materialise.
He is a player that he highly-touted in the football world as he has previously been linked to Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Considering Arsenal’s new transfer approach which is aiming to sign young English players as we have seen with Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White, the signing of Aarons is exactly the character the Gunners are looking for.
His blistering pace, quality crossing and ability to drive past an opposition player would set up perfectly with Kieran Tierney on the other flank.
Due to Aarons being a young English player with a high ceiling, it is likely that the Canaries will out-price the Gunners as they would have little time to replace him.
The realistic signing: Tariq Lamptey
The Athletic have said that Arsenal are interested in a potential swap deal that sees Bellerin join Barcelona and Emerson Royal move in the opposite direction.
This seemed the most realistic right-back signing the Gunners can expect to see before the end of the transfer window, until Tottenham wrestled in at the eleventh hour to agree their own deal for the player.
That leaves Arsenal looking elsewhere, with Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey possibly the most realistic next option.
Arsenal have already signed Lamptey’s team-mate last season in Ben White, so reuniting him with Lamptey to form the right side of Mikel Arteta’s defence would be smart because the tactical familiarity is already there.
Lamptey also checks the boxes which Edu and the club have been so keen on in their recent recruitment drive. At just 20-years-old, the former Chelsea youngster represents a long-term investment and he also ticks the homegrown status which the club have been keen on.
While there may be doubts over his defensive output, tactically he will play a huge part in unlocked Arsenal’s ball progression out of defence and provide the balance the side has so badly lacked over recent seasons.
The cheap option: Noussair Mazraoui
Arsenal have already spent over £125m so far in this transfer window, so it would be unlikely for the club to go on a spending spree unless current members of the squad are sold for high prices.
If this fails to materialise then Arsenal could look to sign a right-back on a cheap deal. One deal they could potentially look at is Ajax defender Noussair Mazraoui.
The Morrocan international is yet a sign a new contract and his current deal expires in less than 12 months, meaning unless he agrees to a new deal the Amsterdam club will be looking to sell him elsewhere to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer.
The 23-year-old has plenty of Champions League experience and was instrumental in getting the young squad to the semi-finals in 2019.
He’d certainly fit Arsenal’s mould in terms of signing young players and he is a quality right-back that Arsenal could sign for a bargain.
