Tottenham secured the £26.7million signing of Emerson Royal from Barcelona on transfer deadline day.
The Brazil defender is now officially a Spurs player, signing a five-year contract with Nuno Espirito Santo ‘s side.
Emerson made just three appearances in total for Barca, who were effectively forced to sell the new Tottenham defender because of their financial difficulties.
Now, some interesting news surrounding Barca’s finances has emerged – with RAC 1 reporting that the Catalan club have now cut their payroll by €145million (£124.6million) following the departures of some key players.
Of course, Emerson leaving the club does not have a huge impact on the finances, in relative terms, with Lionel Messi departing to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.
Barcelona allowed 11 players to leave the club in total, with some of their stars also being forced to take pay cuts – including Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba.
Barca president Joan Laporta, when speaking in a press conference last month, said this: “We are happy to have resolved with Pique the issue (of registering new signings). To reduce salary is very admirable.
“In Kun’s (Aguero’s) case, it is not yet resolved, but we expect other captains to act like Pique.
“Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto have been very good, we understand it is a complex issue, but we are sure it will be sorted.
“The situation is dramatic, but we have good news. Our strategic plan, and the experience we all have, gives us creditability, I am convinced that we will come through this.”
Emerson was one of the players to leave, with Spurs really benefitting from Barca’s financial issues. Serge Aurier also left Tottenham late on deadline day following the new right-back’s arrival.
Tottenham’s new defender, who will wear the No. 12 shirt in north London, said that he was delighted to be representing “one of the best clubs in the world” following his arrival.
“Hey guys, I’m here to show my joy, to be in the best league in the world and at one of the best clubs in the world,” he said in a video message from Tottenham’s Twitter account.
“I’m very happy for the opportunity that Tottenham is giving. I’m looking forward to arriving soon to get a taste of this wonderful club.
“Come on you Spurs, see you soon!”
Emerson will not need to spend time in quarantine following his signing and will team up with his new colleagues very soon.
He will look to put himself into contention to go straight into Espirito Santo’s team to face Crystal Palace once the international break concludes.
