Louis van Gaal’s honest two-word verdict explains why Edu spent £30m on Arsenal transfer

Arsenal had a very busy summer transfer window in terms of incomings, with six new faces arriving at the Emirates Stadium in total.

The Gunners, who have started off their Premier League season poorly and lie bottom of the Premier League table, are looking for these six new signings to bolster their options as Mikel Arteta looks to keep his job in north London.

Arteta brought in Martin Odegaard for £30million, which was Edu’s fourth signing of the summer, to try and relieve the creative burden placed on Emile Smith Rowe at Arsenal.

Odegaard had a six-month loan spell at the Gunners last season, where he had four direct goal contributions, but will be looking to improve on his displays now he is officially an Arsenal player.

There is no doubting the Norwegian’s talent, with his technical ability right up there with the very best. His eye for passing, flair on the ball and all-round footballing intelligence make him a very exciting talent.

Now, the 22-year-old, who starred in Norway’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands on Wednesday evening, has been praised by Dutch boss Louis van Gaal, also speaking about Erling Haaland, who fired the Norwegians into the lead early on.

Speaking to Norwegian outlet VG, the former Manchester United boss said: “They have a fantastic striker, Haaland, and they have a fantastic passer, Odegaard.”

Those two words, “fantastic passer”, that is what Arsenal supporters will be hoping to see in abundance this season.

Odegaard did showcase his passing ability in Arsenal’s only win of the season so far – a 6-0 thumping of West Bromwich Albion in the Carabao Cup – where he played a one-two with Bukayo Saka, using his backheel to find the England star, who netted in style.

Arteta, when speaking about signing Odegaard on a permanent basis last month, spoke about bringing players in who can be “models in this football club”.

The Gunners boss said: “Well a lot of things that he brought last season, he made us better.

“We needed more options, more alternatives, creativity and players that can be models in this football club.

“He’s still a really young man but he has huge experiences in big clubs already and he has a unique talent for the way we want to play as well.

“So I am delighted the club has made an effort and we have now Martin in a permanent deal here.”

Arsenal supporters will be hoping Odegaard comes back from international duty unscathed and will be available for their must-win clash with Norwich City on Saturday, September 11.
