Good evening and welcome to live coverage of Thomas Tuchel post-match press conference after Chelsea’s 1-0 Champions League victory over Zenit.
The Blues got the defence of their European Cup off to the perfect start, although their performance was far from convincing.
In the end, Romelu Lukaku made the difference. That has been the case in almost every game the Belgian star has played. His £97.5million signing from Inter Milan has proved a hugely important piece of business for the Blues.
Chelsea were sluggish for much of the contest. Their passing was poor and several promising attacks lost momentum around the edge of the Zenit penalty area.
It wasn’t until midway through the second period the deadlock was broken. The ball was worked to Cesar Azpilicueta and his cross to the back post found Lukaku. It was never in doubt the 28-year-old would simply guide his header into the corner of Stanislav Kritsyuk net.
The goal was enough for Chelsea to start their Group H campaign, although Tuchel will not be best pleased with his side’s performance.
We’ll have the post-match thoughts of the German below as we are in position for his press conference.
