Chelsea performance proves title credentials under Thomas Tuchel as they thump Tottenham – Scott Clayton

The match begins by paying tribute to Chelsea and Tottenham great, Jimmy Greaves who sadly passed away at age 81. A lovely touch to start what should’ve been an enthralling battle between the rivals. Both teams hoping to come away with the 3 points.

Tottenham started the opening moments of the match the more promising with the Blues starting sluggishly. They started with a very strong high press which stopped Chelsea from getting any type of rhythm. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side, expected to sit back and hope for the counter-attack, took the game to Chelsea from the second the whistle blew. 25 minutes in and Chelsea had struggled to get into Tottenham’s final third.

Whilst the boys in blue looked off the pace in front, their backline faced the prowess of Son Heung-min, Harry Kane and Lo Celso. Tottenham had a very good chance on the break when Son set Reguilón free down the left and a pass into the middle was cleared out by Antonio Rudiger. The solid relaxed defending we’ve been used to under Thomas Tuchel had a wobble and nervous look about them.

A nicely worked chance opened up on the thirty minute mark when Alonso pinged in a low cross to Havertz, his touch a little off but still managed to get a shot off but the effort blocked. The first touch made the chance to get a good shot off that much harder.

Minutes later Son got a chance when Rudger got isolated trying to win the ball and a pass in behind Thiago Silva and Alonso was on. Arrizabalaga very brave rushed out to win the ball from Son feet.

Lukaku had a hard time getting into the first half. He linked up with the attacking two behind him once or twice but the game went by without him really getting a sniff in the first half.

In a game that cried for Ngolo Kante, Tuchel looked to his bench at halftime and recognised the need for the World Cup winner. The energy bought onto the pitch by Kante made all the difference. Exactly what we lacked in the first half. Not usually the man on the score sheet, Kante finds the back of the net with the help of Eric Diers shin. Hugo Lloris is stunned by the deflection as the ball goes into his left side of the goal.

Kante replacing Mount at halftime is a decision I wasn’t so sure about it and where we would score from with fewer attacking threats on the pitch then minutes later stopped thinking like that. Five minutes into the second half Chelsea got the lead by Thiago Silva as he headed home a corner. His third goal in a Chelsea shirt seen him celebrate with a kiss of the badge. Thiago Silva showing age is just a number at 36 years of age.

Havertz got in behind down the left from an Alonso pass, his pass went across the goal to find Azpilicueta who cut it back for Alonso. His effort cleared off the line from Dier.

Super sub Kante

With 57 minutes on the clock, the Blues got another to get a comfortable lead. N’Golo Kante had a shot from outside the box that took a wicked deflection off Dier and went in off the post after wrong-footing the goalkeeper. This is what title contenders do. Soak up pressure when they aren’t playing the best and win games when they start off sluggish.

Antonio Rudiger added injury to defeat with a late goal, a beautiful cut back from German teammate Werner who spots Rudger run back for the pass. He slotted it home to score his first league goal of the season. Will this goal add more pressure onto the board to give Rudger what he wants in terms of a new deal.

Antonio Rudiger with his first goal of the season

The Chelsea faithful will enjoy another win away to Tottenham as the charge for the title continues. Having one over both Arsenal and Tottenham in their stadiums in the opening five games of the season and not being beat away to Liverpool with ten men for half the match showed how reliable Tuchel has got the side in big matches.

The second-half performance against rival Tottenham side will do wonders for Thomas Tuchel’s squad and their title credentials.

A lot like many of the ‘big games’ under Thomas Tuchel so far, Chelsea are able to strike the right blend of defensively sound, not giving up much space. Whilst also posing their own attacking threat and being able to outnumber opposing defences in quite quick fashion. This game no different

Overall though Tuchel continues his impressive record away from home since taking charge in January, his early promise was to create a team no one wants to play against. Tonight was more proof that promise is becoming reality.

Chelsea have now got thirteen points from a possible fifteen in the league. The only goal conceded in the league this season when we conceded a penalty away to Liverpool after going down to ten men and drawing 1-1. Wins against Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham have helped us keep a charge for the title with a huge home game against Man City next before the fixture list gets easier on paper.

Rudiger’s late winner helped Chelsea go joint top of the table with Liverpool. The fear of Kepa Arrizabalaga before match squashed in the second half as Son and Kane struggled to get into the game. On his 111th appearance for the club he kept his 40th clean sheet.
