Thomas Tuchel hints at Romelu Lukaku Chelsea leadership role once Cesar Azpilicueta retires

Thomas Tuchel has dropped the biggest hint yet that Romelu Lukaku will be the next Chelsea captain once Cesar Azpilicueta either leaves or retires in west London.

Lukaku, 28, has made a fine start to his Blues homecoming having already scored four goals in all competitions, with Tottenham up next on his radar as he looks to make another statement in this year’s Premier League Golden Boot race.

His £98million arrival in the summer from Inter Milan means that the Red Devils’ all-time top record goalscorer is a certainty to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

We know a lot about his clinical ability in front of goal but what about his leadership potential going forward in the future?

Well, manager Thomas Tuchel has been speaking about just that in an interview with Sky Sports ahead of the Spurs derby, which kicks off at 4:30 pm on Sunday.

Despite outlining his credible potential to take the captaincy now, the German believes this discussion isn’t needed at this exact moment due to one person being present in the squad.

“Yes, I think he could be. He has a lot of things you need to be a captain,” Tuchel said confidently.

“But we have fantastic captains so no need to think about this now. He behaves like one and this is more important than to actually have the captain’s band.”

He then went on to outline Lukaku’s qualities going forward and what he has already learned from his club-record signing.

Tuchel added: “I’m so happy to see him so humble and so involved in the communications with everybody in the dressing room and on the pitch, so that makes me very happy as we had a strong bond in the team last season.

“We rely on that strong bond again [this season] and Romelu is now a big part of that and he’s a fantastic guy.

“He behaves like one [a captain].”

Current Blues skipper Azpilicueta has already inadvertently given his recommendation to the 28-year-old to take over from himself when he believes his own time is up at the club after his wonderful nine years and counting at the current European Champions.

He said in his pre-match Zenit player press conference: “He’s a great personality, a great character, a leader. He is vocal, ambitious.

“He helps everybody and tries to help his offensive teammates with how we can be more dangerous. His presence also, you respect him.

“When the defenders see him, of course he is a big lad and powerful. We saw it last Saturday, how efficient he was. This is massive for us, the impact on the pitch and off the pitch has been immense. We are very happy, he is a top-quality player.”

Lukaku will certainly hope that his current Premier League xG of 2.3 as per FBref.com continues as he looks to spearhead his beloved Blues to another league title, after they last won it back in the 2016-17 season under Antonio Conte.
