Chelsea have made an impressive start to the league season, collecting 13 points from their first five Premier League encounters.
Thomas Tuchel’s Blues currently sit top of the Premier League table after a 3-0 mauling against Tottenham Hotspur, edging ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on account of alphabetical order.
In fact, Chelsea are undefeated in seven matches in all competitions having also won the UEFA Super Cup, whilst also managing to get their Champions League defence off to the perfect start against Zenit St Petersburg.
They now have the opportunity to extend that run to eight matches in yet another competition on Wednesday as they renew rivalries with Aston Villa – who they dismissed 3-0 only a week ago.
Chelsea could be tempted to make a few alterations to the starting line-up for the clash but Tuchel has a few small considerations to make on the injury front.
Here’s who could miss out against Villa:
After taking what Tuchel described as a “huge hit” against Zenit, the Senegalese keeper was left out of the Chelsea squad against Tottenham to be replaced by Kepa Arrizabalaga.
It remains quite to be seen whether the 29-year-old will be fit enough to play a part against Villa, with a decision surely set to be taken shortly before the game.
The American international suffered an ankle injury on international duty with the USMNT and missed the Premier League game against Aston Villa and Tottenham.
Tuchel has suggested that he won’t play a part on Wednesday.
Speaking in his post-match press conference after batting Spurs aside, he said: “The game against Aston Villa is maybe too close, I hope I am wrong. This is my impression with him not in training so far. Let’s see tomorrow.
“Maybe he had a good progression today. Maybe it is possible. It would be super nice to have him but it is doubtful.”
The French midfielder certainly seems back on top form after his spell on the sidelines at the start of the season.
He was introduced off the bench against Tottenham and had a wonderful influence, whilst also finding the back of the net.
Kante will of course be fit to play against Aston Villa but it remains to be seen quite whether Tuchel will elect to risk him in the Carabao Cup.
