Mikel Arteta told how Gabriel Martinelli can solve Arsenal’s growing Bukayo Saka dilemma – Jake Stokes

Bukayo Saka has extended his Premier League goal drought to 19 games after another goalless display in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moore.

The England international’s lack of guile in front of goal has incurred calls for the 20-year-old winger to be pulled from the limelight and reduced to a more rotational role alongside Nicolas Pepe on the right-wing.

However, despite Saka’s diminutive direct goal contributions of late, Arsenal’s number seven won the foul that saw Martin Odegaard delicately lift the ball beyond Nick Pope into the top corner.

But, for England, the Hale End graduate has been a potent threat and frequent feature among the goals for Gareth Southgate’s side raising questions as to whether who is to blame for Saka’s turbulent form.

Tom Canton and Bailey Keogh, TheArsenal Way duo, and Jake Stokes, trends writer, delved into why the youngster hasn’t been able to emulate his international displays and what Mikel Arteta must do to revitalise Saka’s fruitful form, live on The Arsenal Way show on YouTube.

Canton kickstarted the debate by noting Saka’s plummet in form for the Gunners, suggesting that Arteta doesn’t know his best position and whether a primary role on the right is allocated, competing for minutes with Pepe.

“Saka didn’t have the best game against Burnley,” he began. “You see how good he is for England, see how good he is on the right – electric, vibrant and dynamic. But, when you see how he plays for Arsenal he isn’t as influential on games.”

Keogh agreed, claiming that Saka’s situation is worrying and that he may have been burned out to the end of last season having played 46 games for the Gunners before a busy summer at Euro 2020.

“It is worrying [Saka’s lack of goal contributions],” he said. “I think he got a bit burned out last season and now he is struggling to contribute to the goals for Arsenal this season.”

Keogh continued, insisting that Saka’s all-round play hasn’t been bad but he can certainly add a lot more with the quality fans know he has.

“His all-round play hasn’t been bad, but he can definitely do more,” he said, before alluding to how a break from the pressure could open up new avenues of tactical possibilities for Gabriel Martinelli.

“He’s not the Saka we all know, or the Saka we know he can be. Maybe taking him out of the side for a couple of games might do him good, bring Martinelli in on the left. We all know about Saka’s qualities but his goal contributions are worrying.”

Stokes added by claiming that it is harsh to judge players all the time on statistics and Saka must get a break to ease the weight on his shoulders to perform for the north London side.

“We can’t judge players purely on goals and assists all the time,” he began. “It’s important Saka does get a rest and is pulled from the limelight.

“With his age, he needs to play with the freedom knowing that if he doesn’t score or assist his team won’t lose and that is where [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang has to step in to ease that responsibility on Saka.”
