Gallas sends surprise dig towards Tottenham defence including Romero and Emerson Royal

William Gallas has made a brutal dig at Tottenham Hotspur’s defence, saying they ‘don’t have top-class defenders’.

The ex-Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea centre-back made the assessment while evaluating his former club’s title chances – saying they need to sign ‘top-class’ players at the back in order to qualify for the Champions League and challenge for titles.

During the summer transfer window, the club brought in the Serie A Defender of the Year Cristian Romero from Atalanta and Brazillian right-back Emerson Royal from Barcelona.

But, speaking to Genting Casino, Gallas was scathing of Spurs’ summer signings, suggesting they are not up to scratch.

He said: “To improve their defence, they have to bring in top-class players. At the moment they don’t have top-class defenders. If Spurs want to qualify for the Champions League and compete for titles they need to bring the right players at the back. At the moment they don’t have the right players.

“I think it will be a really difficult season for Tottenham. They need top-class defenders and they didn’t sign any top-class defenders.”

It comes after goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini said that Cristian Romero will be “perfect” for Tottenham Hotspur and the Premier League but he will need to adapt first.

“This guy is an animal, I swear. He’s perfect for the Premier League,” he said. “He’s played for many years with three at the back and especially when you play with a very aggressive style and play man for man, it’s a completely different to thing to in a four.

“You have to work and defend more like a group, a group of four and defend more the zone and less the man. So he needs to adjust and he will do it because he’s a clever guy and an amazing player.

“He will, but obviously all these things need time. Everybody needs time to adapt, to adjust to a new culture and a new country.

“There’s a lot of things going on. It’s not easy. People from the outside sometimes don’t see how many things change in people’s lives when they change country. It’s normal. He needs a little bit of time but he will be amazing.”
