Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher in agreement on why Chelsea were ‘battered’ by Manchester City

Chelsea fell to their first defeat of the season on Saturday as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City dispatched the Blues 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

It was a scoreline that perhaps even flattered Thomas Tuchel’s side, who were second best throughout the contest, and that is a view taken by both Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry.

The Premier League icons were both appearing on Monday Night Football and analysed the outcome of Chelsea’s defeat, with both agreeing that Tuchel was out-managed by his opposite number.

It left the two clubs level on points in the top-flight in what looks set to be an enthralling Premier League title race. Henry was eager to compliment Guardiola as well, however.

“On and off the ball they dominated Chelsea, I was a bit disappointed with how Tuchel set up the team,” the Arsenal legend said on Monday Night Football.

“The way they played was just outstanding, tactically they took the ball away from Chelsea.

“Pep got it from Cruyff the best way to defend is to have the ball, keep it, make sure they don’t have it and they did it so well.”

Carragher agreed, complimenting Guardiola’s method of front-foot defending, comparing it to how Mourinho set his Chelsea side up in years gone by.

“This is was a defensive masterclass and we always attribute that to Jose Mourinho, sitting back and you nick it 1-0, they haven’t nicked it 1-0, they battered Chelsea on their own patch,” the pundit said.

“Both defences were on top but I loved this games, Chelsea defending deep because they like that but Pep’s team defending from the front, pressing high.”
