Edu handed discount deal for next Olivier Giroud who is proven alongside Ronaldo and Lukaku – Chris Davison

I think most Arsenal fans will agree that the time is coming for the club to shake things up a little bit in the striker department.

Not only are two of the Gunner’s frontmen out of contract in just under a year, but scoring goals has also proved to be a bit of an issue in recent times.

Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah’s current deals expire in June 2022, and both players could leave for free if a new contract resolution cannot be found. understands Lacazette, who joined the club for a fee of around £52 million in 2017, has no plans to extend his stay.

Meanwhile, talks with Nketiah over a new deal have also proven to be unsuccessful according to reports. It’s becoming even more evident that something needs to happen, whether that’s in January or next summer.

Despite signing a new contract last year, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has failed to reach the heights we would usually associate with him and only managed to score 15 goals in 39 appearances last season.

The initial signs this season do appear to be a bit more encouraging, but you get the sense he’s not back to his best just yet. Stories appeared during the summer transfer window just gone, which suggested Arsenal were open to moving Aubameyang on if a convincing offer was received, but taking Nketiah and Lacazette’s situations into consideration, I don’t think it would be a wise move to offload the club captain just yet.

I’m sure the recruitment team is drawing up a long list of potential targets for the future, and one of them could prove to be a clever bit of business by Edu.

Dusan Vlahovic may not be a name many are familiar with, but he’s certainly making an impression in the Seria A. The Serbian international bagged 21 goals in 37 league appearances last season, putting him just behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku in the top goalscorer table. The 21-year-old has carried his impressive form into this season too, with six goals in eight appearances.

Vlahovic’s performances have understandably attracted interest, with Arsenal and Tottenham reportedly two of the main clubs keeping a close eye. Rather interestingly, the player now finds himself in a similar situation to that of Nketiah and Lacazette.

The Fiorentina man has two years remaining on his current deal and talks over a new contract had been in the works, but according to the Italian club’s president, those talks have now broken down.

“Vlahovic has not accepted our huge contract extension proposal. We’ve been trying for months, but it’s over.”

This development could be an indicator that the player has his heart set on a move away, potentially opening up the door for Arsenal to pounce.

It will most likely be a situation of easier said than done, as the north London side won’t be the only club sniffing around, but an opportunity has certainly presented itself and Arsenal should be all over it. According to transfermarkt, Vlahovic is valued at £36 million, which isn’t too bad in this day and age, but that price could be slashed if he does not extend his contract.

Still in his early twenties, Vlahovic would fit into the criteria of player that Arsenal profiled this summer, with every signing aged 23 or younger. He has a lot of potential to grow and replacing someone like Lacazette for example would give him more time to adapt rather than being thrown straight in as a starter each week. Training with Aubameyang and taking advice from the Gabon international would also help with his development.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Vlahovic is physically strong, good in the air and lethal in front of goal, offering Mikel Arteta something different moving forward, and you can’t say it isn’t needed. Arsenal have lacked a target man presence in the team since Olivier Giroud’s departure in 2018.

It’s now time to amend that.
