When William Saliba returns to the Arsenal fold, what will his role be and what could this mean for the current defenders at the club who are playing well?

The Arsenal Way team of Tom Canton, Chris Davison and Bailey Keogh discussed everything Arsenal-related on their latest Arsenal Agenda show, including the highly anticipated return of the French defender next season.

The Arsenal Way’s content editor, Chris Davison, started by giving his reaction to the news that Saliba is set to have an important role in the team moving forward, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

CD: “It’s encouraging to hear Saliba will be at Arsenal still. I know Saliba is someone who’s divided opinion between the Arsenal fanbase. We know he’s a talented player with a lot of potential to grow into perhaps one of the most exciting centre-backs in the game.

“So, of course when that’s being mentioned there’s going to be a lot of hype, a lot of excitement surrounding him and rightly so. But we’re still waiting for him to get some competitive minutes in an Arsenal shirt and a lack of that has been frustrating.

Davison then gave his thoughts on Saliba’s Arsenal story so far and the lack of opportunities the Frenchman has received.

“But I know there’s been a lot of stuff going on in Saliba’s personal life and other reasons such as injury. It’s important to remember he’s still a young player and we’ve got to go about it in the right way and ensure his development is going in the right direction.

“The last thing we want to do is to throw him in too early to play Premier League football, he makes one mistake and everyone will be after him. We’ve seen it happen before and it’s how it works unfortunately in the Premier League and especially at a big club like Arsenal.

“I’ll admit at the time when he was going out on loan, we spent over £20 million for him to go on two loans and it became a bit annoying and I’m like what was the point in having him. But looking back at it I can see why Arteta has decided what he has and why the club has gone down that route.

“He’s an important player for the teams he’s been out on loan for and doing really well by the sounds of it. You’d like to think he’s continuing to grow and develop as a player and come back to Arsenal even stronger.”

The Arsenal Way writer and presenter, Bailey Keogh, followed Davison by explaining how Saliba can get into Mikel Arteta’s side.

BK: “I think it’s healthy competition. You’re at a top club at the end of the day and you’re going to have to compete to get in at the centre-back spot. We want to be in the top four and Saliba can’t expect to come back in the summer and start straight away, no, he has to earn that.

“I think Ben White and Gabriel have shown an excellent partnership. The first three games I wondered why we loaned Saliba when clearly we were lacking at the back, but we’ve seen the progression at the back. Saliba will need to work his way in. Ben White has shown the last few games he’s been excellent with the ball, he’s been excellent defensively when before he was looking shaky.

“If Saliba wants to be a top centre-back he’s going to have to dethrone other centre-backs to get his hands on that position.”
