Chelsea fans loved seeing their midfielder Jorginho bossing around former Blue Kevin De Bruyne during the UEFA Nations League third-placed contest between Italy and Belgium.
Jorginho, 29, continued to get the better of his Man City midfield counterpart in the Gli Azzurri’s 2-1 win in this fixture but also in the general battle between the two, which has been a key to settling important Premier League games between the two English footballing heavyweights that both represent.
The Italian regista was able to keep De Bruyne under control in the Champions League final at the end of last season and his short stint from the substitutes bench in this Nations league game was no different.
A clip circulating around Reddit shows Jorginho’s spatial awareness to play out of tight spaces and his know-how when it comes to seeing what’s around him before receiving the ball.
In this example, in the 74th minute in Milan between the two heavyweight nations, the former Napoli man received the ball deep in his own half before performing a lovely bit of skill to get away from De Bruyne and set-up an Italy attack as a consequence of his own trickery on the ball.
A moment that delighted fans on social media who reacted to this specific incident with a sense of pride that their own player is flourishing at not only club level but also on the international stage.
Here is a sample of the best reaction from Reddit.
@straw-hat-alt made a good point: “If Jorginho had the year he’s has with the level of play he’s had for city United Madrid or Bayern he would be considered the best midfielder in the world.”
@SwitchcherooU made an interesting admission: “I can admit that I was wrong about Jorginho. Other people can’t, so they hold onto the same tired arguments. Yes, he’s slow. Yes, he’s unathletic. But neither of those things matter because he’s so savvy.”
@SuitableSympathy2614 wrote: “If that was Mount we wouldn’t hear the end of it.”
However, not everyone is as impressed with the Italian as the fans above with some questioning his involvement in this ‘meaningless fixture.’
@almostmiddleage questioned: “Why did he need to play in such meaningless fixture.. That guy need to preserve himself.”
@Ericxs23 still isn’t Jorginho’s biggest fan despite his consistency: “Still don’t rate him. Ballon’d’snorrrr.”
With both players represented in the final 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, J5 as known to most Blues fans has made his personal claim to win the award ahead of the 30-year-old.
Something that will delight his club manager Thomas Tuchel, who is eager to see his own player win this year’s prestigious award ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have become accustomed to winning the accolade year in, year out.
“He deserves, he is one of those who deserves to win the Ballon d’Or,” the former Borussia Dortmund manager said on Jorginho to Sports Festival via CalcioNews24.
“He is a very intelligent player, it is a pleasure to be his coach.
“The list of 30 candidates came out but for me this list is not important, I do not judge them in that sense.
“These awards do not make much sense to me, obviously the players crave these awards but it is impossible to make a real comparison between all these players. Who should say is the best? Everyone deserves to win it from a certain point of view.
“Obviously I would like someone from Chelsea to win it as it would increase confidence, but it’s not the most important thing in the world of football.”
