Romero struggles, Gil sparkles: How Tottenham’s five signings have done for Nuno Espirito Santo

Tottenham were busy throughout the summer transfer window as Nuno Espirito Santo, Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy attempted to better Spurs’ seventh-placed finish last term.

In the end, the north London club recruited five players throughout the duration of the window.

As per transfermarkt, Spurs invested just over £60m into their current playing staff, whilst welcoming two new signings on loan – those deals with the potential of becoming permanent come the end of the current campaign.

The club have of course endured a rollercoaster start to the new season under their Portuguese boss but the question remains over how well the new arrivals have done on a personal level. takes a look at their respective performances so far to see who has done the best.

Bryan Gil – Sevilla

The young Spaniard arrived in north London with plenty of potential having been involved in a swap deal with former Spurs winger Erik Lamela.

He has certainly displayed that so far in his fledgling Tottenham career. The 20-year-old has shown flashes of real skill and creativity in a side that has been lacking at times.

His statistics of one assist so far probably do not do his performances justice and should he progress the way he is expected to, Gil will certainly become a really exciting addition to the Tottenham squad.

Pierluigi Gollini – Atalanta

Arriving initially on-loan to provide back-up for regular number one Hugo Lloris, the Italian international looks by far and away a better keeper than his short spell with Aston Villa showed.

Gollini has already made five appearances for Spurs – exclusively in the cup competitions – and was the hero as the club progressed past Wolves in the Carabao Cup last month.

He will hope to earn more opportunities as the season progresses.

Emerson Royal – Barcelona

Arriving for a lofty fee of £26.7m, it was certainly a surprise to see Spurs capture the signature of the Brazilian just a few weeks after he had become a permanent Barcelona player.

He has endured a somewhat indifferent start to life in north London, however. The right-back struggled on debut in the 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, whilst he was also left exposed against Chelsea.

Emerson made a substitute appearance against Arsenal in the North London Derby – by which time the damage had already been done.

His attacking play has earned him praise but he has on occasion been left wanting defensively and will hope to improve as the season progresses.

Cristian Romero – Atalanta

There is no doubt that the Argentine is an excellent defender. After all, he earned the award as the best defender in Serie A last season, whilst new Spurs teammate Gollini has labelled him as a ‘beast’. He just hasn’t had time to express his true abilities in north London yet.

Having arrived with an injury, he then missed more games having to quarantine due to a bizarre incident on international duty.

He has made just two Premier League starts but the 23-year-old could easily shoot up this list with a consistent run in the team under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Pape Matar Sarr – Metz

At the bottom of this list mainly due to not being at the club following his move, the youngster returned to Metz on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old has continued to sparkle for the Ligue 1 outfit since – playing every single league game so far this season.

In that time, Metz have only won once but Sarr will certainly be hoping that his performances earn him an opportunity once he finally arrives in north London next summer.
