Antonio Rudiger, Hakim Ziyech, Romelu Lukaku – Chelsea injury news ahead of Brentford clash

Chelsea will be looking to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League table this weekend when they travel the short distance to Brentford on Saturday evening.

A 3-1 victory against Southampton brought them back to the summit before the international break but Thomas Tuchel and co will be well aware of the dangers posed by Thomas Frank’s men.

The Bees have taken points from Arsenal and Liverpool already and Chelsea will be hoping they are not the next big name to fall victim to their fellow west Londoners. But Tuchel will have to do so with a host of fitness concerns.

With that in mind, has taken a look at the latest fitness concerns coming from Stamford Bridge.

Antonio Rudiger

Antonio Rudiger has been the subject of plenty of speculation so far this season as his impressive performances continue to be marred by an ongoing contract negotiation.

During the most recent international break with Germany, however, the centre-back injured his back, causing him to miss their second qualifier with North Macedonia.

Tuchel has now confirmed that he will miss the clash with Brentford as well.

What has been said: “He is not (available). Toni Rudiger is injured, he came back injured from national team, so not available.”

Christian Pulisic

The American was a casualty of the season’s first international break and although he appears to be returning to fitness, the Brentford game may well come too soon for him.

Pulisic limped out of the action for the USMNT with an ankle injury and there were hopes he would be back in full training in the week before the Brentford game.

However, Tuchel confirmed that the wait will go on for the American.

What Tuchel has said: “Christian Pulisic is still injured,” the Chelsea manager said in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.

Expected return date: N/A

Thiago Silva

While Silva is not injured, there is a good chance he will miss the Blues weekend clash.

The centre-back was called up on international duty with Brazil and is not set to return to the UK until the morning of the Brentford game, and it sounds incredibly unlikely that he will be involved.

What Tuchel has said: “Thiago will be back in the afternoon, hopefully safe from his match in Brazil,” Tuchel said on Friday.

“We had our talk today about Brentford, had our tactical training today, and he missed all that.

“He played 90 minutes and he has 12 hours of travelling, so that is the answer maybe about his availability.”

Expected return date: Malmo (H) – Wednesday, October 20.

Hakim Ziyech

Ziyech is a fresh fitness concern to add to Tuchel’s worries ahead of the Brentford game with the German revealing that he had missed the club’s last two training sessions.

The Morocco international has become a peripheral figure at Stamford Bridge after making a fast start to life under Frank Lampard and it now appears he will have to wait even longer to prove himself again.

What Tuchel has said: “Hakim Ziyech, he missed the last two training sessions with a headache and it seems he won’t be in the squad tomorrow.”

Expected return date: Malmo (H) – Wednesday, October 20.

Romelu Lukaku

There was panic among Chelsea fans when Lukaku was forced to leave the Belgium squad early with what Roberto Martinez described as fatigue.

However, pictures of the striker in training on Thursday boosted the mood and it was confirmed on Friday that Lukaku would be available to face Brentford on Saturday evening.

What Tuchel has said: “Romelu is fine and will be involved tomorrow.”

Expected return date: Brentford (A) – Saturday, October 16.
