Steve Bruce has been sacked by Newcastle United and all talk has immediately turned to who will replace him at St James’ Park.

The Magpies have decided to ditch their manager following their 3-2 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday in what was Bruce’s 1,000th game as a manager.

Following their takeover by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, Newcastle will be looking for a coach who can guide them away from the Premier League relegation zone and then splash the cash on transfer in January and the summer ahead of trying to mix it with the big boys at the top of the league next season.

Paulo Fonseca is the current favourite for the job, although a number of former Chelsea managers have also been touted, namely Frank Lampard and Antonio Conte.

Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp does not believe Conte is the man for the Magpies though.

Redknapp thinks Conte may be interested in taking over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United should the club decide to sack the Norwegian.

The Italian has tasted success in the Premier League after a successful spell with United’s title rivals Chelsea, and is currently out of a job following his exit from Inter Milan in the summer.

He’s subsequently been linked with a number of potential vacancies, including the manager roles at Arsenal, Tottenham in the summer and now Newcastle United.

However, Redknapp thinks that Conte won’t move to the Magpies as he may be waiting to see what happens in Manchester.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Newcastle’s 3-2 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, the Englishman said: “I think he [Bruce] looks like a man he knows he’s done as much as he can. He’s a symbol of the previous regime, the fans don’t want him anymore. But because of the respect I have for him, I find it difficult to see this.

“He’ll be hating every minute of it, you have to be mad. Look at that face, he doesn’t want to be here. He’ll be relieved when he gets that phone call and it will be coming soon, I don’t want to talk out of term.

“You need the right man managing the team, he’s still going to be the most important man, he sets the tempo, he sets good examples, to find a good manager right now, there’s mooted about Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Antonio Conte, Conte maybe has one eye on what’s going on at Man United.

“It’s not that easy to get the players right now, the manager. I think Steve [Bruce] will be looking forward to the day he comes in and stepping aside, taking a break because this is not nice for anyone to be going through.”

There’s no telling where Conte will be heading next just yet, but judging by his record, it’s fair to say that he’s bound to improve any side he takes charge of.
