Thomas Tuchel must avoid repeat of major Maurizio Sarri mistake in Chelsea’s clash with Malmo

Wednesday evening’s clash with Malmo represents a key game for Chelsea as they continue their Champions League title defence.

The Blues have had an inconsistent start to life back in the competition. They earned a win against Zenit St Petersburg to kick their campaign off, whilst they were then defeated by Italian giants Juventus in Turin.

Another defeat to the Swedish champions may potentially leave Thomas Tuchel’s men peering nervously over their shoulders as they aim to book their place in the knockout rounds.

Of course, considering the difference in quality between the two teams – on paper at least – the Blues should be heading into the game with a quiet confidence of earning victory at Stamford Bridge.

However, that was not the case when Malmo last visited west London back in 2019 for the second-leg of the Europa League round of 16 tie.

Despite eventually winning the game 3-0, and notching an aggregate scoreline of 5-1, the Blues started extremely slowly, with then boss Maurizio Sarri criticising their lack of confidence and the nerves that appeared to hamper the team during the opening exchanges of the match.

Talking in his post-match press conference, he said: “I think that we played the first 30 minutes without confidence, nervous. We were unable to move the ball very fast, we were in trouble on the pressing.

“Then a little bit better in the last 15 minutes of the first-half and then after the first goal, very well. We started to move the ball very fast with confidence. It wasn’t very easy for us to play this match of course so I can understand my players for the first 30 minutes.”

The Italian continued: “I am worried about the first 30 minutes, only offensively, because we cannot play our football without confidence.”

Tuchel’s side is completely different to the one that took to the pitch over two years ago but Chelsea cannot afford another slow start considering the importance of the game to the rest of the Blues’ potential participation in the competition this season.
