Marina Granovskaia’s next Chelsea transfer mission made perfectly clear after £68.5m talks

Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet has called on his old club to secure the signing of Jules Kounde next summer.

The 23-year-old defender, who has less than three years remaining on his contract with Sevilla, was a big target for the Blues over the summer, but the west London club failed to meet the Spanish outfit’s £68.5million price tag.

Kounde is understood to be keen on the move as well, but a January switch seems unlikely, with Poyet urging his former club to go all out for his signature when the season concludes next summer.

The Uruguayan coach managed Kounde during his days as Bordeaux boss in 2018, and is fully aware of the ability the France international possesses.

Speaking to Genting Casino, Poyet said: “Jules Kounde played 90 minutes in every game he played for me. Jules was a very good professional from a young age – at 19, he was already assuming responsibilities.

“He was a guy who I connected with very well from the beginning – he had what I like from a centre-half. The responsibility I gave him as centre-half, with and without the ball, he understood it from the first minute, so I knew he would be very, very important for me.

“I was not surprised when he went to Sevilla for 25 million, because I knew he wanted to have an experience at a bigger club. And he’s already won the Europa League with Sevilla, which is fantastic and important for him as well.

“I think he’s got the quality to come to a top team in England – I’ve got no doubt. And if it’s Chelsea – even better, because I would like to see him, and I would like him to play for Chelsea.

“He wants to improve all the time, he listens to the coach, he wants to train. He is very powerful, a very special boy, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s coming to England next summer.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel spoke about the failed move for Kounde in September and the German coach confirmed that the west Londoners did hold a firm interest in the Sevilla star.

“It was clear we tried for Kounde and Saul (Niguez) and it was very, very late but it was a very, very smooth transfer window because I had full concentration on training and on my team,” Tuchel said.

“The amount of support of (technical and performance advisor) Petr Cech as a link, and together with Marina (Granovskaia, director), was fantastic, so it was pretty relaxed with a good outcome because in the end it was possible to add Saul into the group, which was a key position for us to have more alternatives and to not pull all the pressure on the three guys.

“So there’s a lot of competition now going on and it’s my job to be a good moderator.”

Kounde himself spoke about the speculation strongly linking him with a departure from Seville and insisted that he has put it all behind him.

Speaking towards the end of September, he said: “We all know the summer has been hectic, I would not say complicated, but that is the past now.

“I am focused on the team. The most important performance is on the pitch. The team needs me and I need the team too to give my best and that is what I am trying to do.

“So far I’m happy with the results of the team and my personal performances, although I can still improve and have a better season than the previous one.”
