‘Title hopes in danger’ – National media react to Chelsea’s uninspiring draw with Wolves

Chelsea were held to a 0-0 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon, in a game that was overshadowed by Covid-19 controversy.

The Blues had suffered a significant outbreak of the virus ahead of the match, with a request being lodged with the Premier League for a postponement.

That request however was rejected and Chelsea were subsequently unable to make up ground on their title rivals and now slip six points behind current leaders Manchester City, with Arsenal now quickly making up ground behind the Blues in fourth.

football.london takes a look at how media from around the country saw the result on Sunday afternoon.

A glance at the Premier League table will do nothing to improve Thomas Tuchel’ s mood. Chelsea had arrived at Molineux full of righteous fury after their request for this game to be postponed was rejected. Although Tuchel’s side did not respond by downing tools on the pitch, it was difficult to find many positives after 90 minutes of toil against Wolves cast further doubt on their ability to keep up with Manchester City and Liverpool.

Ultimately the only bright spot for an irritable Tuchel, who had seven players out with Covid-19, was that Chelsea refused to wilt. Otherwise this was another tale of frustration for the European champions. They never looked likely to prise Wolves apart and after threatening to make it a three-way title race for much of the campaign, Chelsea suddenly find themselves in danger of falling out of contention after winning only three of their past eight games.

Chelsea were left frustrated by a 0-0 draw at Wolves that saw them slip further behind in the Premier League title race.

Daniel Podence’s first-half finish that was ruled out following a VAR check was as close as the game got to a goal with incidents at a minimum in the Molineux fog.

Chelsea pushed and probed for the goal but created very little against a resilient Wolves side and the draw means they are now six points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

As depleted Chelsea laboured to a draw in thick fog here, it was hard to escape the feeling that their title hopes are in danger of fading from view.

Thomas Tuchel was furious that his European champions, who had seven positive Covid-19 cases in their ranks, had been forced to face Wolves after the Premier League rejected their appeal for postponement.

Chelsea felt playing the game was a risk to health and welfare. The League deemed they had enough fit players and told them to crack on.

Yet beyond that, the bald facts are that Chelsea had nearly £350million worth of talent in their squad — plus homegrown England regulars Mason Mount and Reece James — and that should have been enough to put away a Wolves side who had their own problems with injury and illness.

Covid-19-hit Chelsea slipped further behind leaders Manchester City in the Premier League title race as they were held to a goalless draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The visitors had a request for the fixture to be postponed because of a coronavirus outbreak rejected on Sunday morning – with manager Thomas Tuchel saying they were “a bit angry” with the decision.

Consequently, the Blues named just four outfield players on the bench at Molineux. The first XI was still strong enough to be competitive but they struggled to create as they were held to a second successive draw.
