Thomas Tuchel has just had his press conference after the comfortable win over Middlesbrough, but immediately the focus was on the international break coming up.
No manager wants his star players playing for their country mid-season like this, but that’s especially true when it comes to injured players. Reece James missed a couple of months of the season, came back for Chelsea and hurt himself again – but before he’s even been able to make his second comeback, England have called him up for their matches this coming week.
Tuchel, of course had a problem with this:
“The recommendation is that he does not go. He needs one more week of individual rehabilitation and it’s not the job of the national team to do this.”
It’s a pretty understandable stance. Tuchel has barely been able to use his right back since January – why should England get to use him, when they have ten times the options that Tuchel does in that position?
In the end it will be down to Reece – but we really hope Gareth Southgate sees sense and treats the defender with the same caution that his club are.
