Chelsea fans have had the chance to get to know Antonio Rudiger quite well over the few seasons, but it’s only in the last 12 months that we’ve really come to appreciate his love of a long shot.
It’s not just observation bias either. At least once a game, whether Chelsea are winning, losing or drawing, the defender surges forward and has a crack from range.
It’s partly because our midfielders – N’Golo Kante Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic – are all quite shot shy, leaving room for Rudi to have a whack.
In fact, looking at the numbers, Rudiger has 32 shots this season. Only Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz are ahead of him.
Rudiger has 32 Premier League shots, while Kante has 10, Jorginho 8, and Kovacic 17. Rudiger has also managed two goals – but not one from distance… it’s coming though, and it might be the most wildly celebrated goal at Stamford Bridge for some time.
