New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly will give Thomas Tuchel a monster £200m transfer budget this summer, according to a report from the well connected Blues correspondent Matt Law at the Telegraph.
It will be a signal of the new ownership’s intentions, and will help Tuchel’s squad recover after some major losses in terms of the playing staff.
It’s noted in the piece however that this £200m sum factors in expected sales this summer. So it’s not as good as it sounds.
They’re in need of at least one central defender, a defensive midfielder and probably an attacker too.
In the modern market – even post-Covid – even £200m is barely enough to buy three first team players, unless you choose very wisely.
It should also be remembered that, while Chelsea did spend big on Romelu Lukaku last summer, they more than offset that fee with sales, meaning it was essentially a zero spend window.
That means there should already be plenty in the bank to spend.
