Now here’s a story we could have predicted almost perfectly 6 months ago…
SportWitness are reporting a story in AS that Saul Niguez, the Atletico Madrid midfielder who was on loan at Chelsea this season, will return to his parent club this summer, after the Blues decided not to trigger the purchase clause in his contract.
That wasn’t a tricky call to make. Despite ultimately having some decent games for us, the midfielder never looked too comfortable in Premier League action, and in fact had some of the worst performances we’ve seen from a Chelsea player in his early games.
There were flashes of his ability, and his versatility ended up being incredibly useful when we were in the darkest moments of our season, with injuries and Covid hitting hard,
But being played out of position was exactly why he was keen to leave Atletico, and we can’t imagine he was delighted to see the situation repeat itself.
