Antonio Rudiger has done his first interview in Spain as a Real Madrid player, and he was asked about when his new team had first contacted him about a move to the Spanish capital.
The move really gathered momentum around March and April, but it seems contact had initially been made long before that.
“The first time I heard about Madrid’s interest…imagine. It was like, wow,” the defender said in quotes picked up by Football.London.
“They first contacted me in September or October, I think. A club like this doesn’t call you many times, so it was amazing. In this period, it is true that there have been many conversations. But if I am honest, I only considered Madrid or Chelsea.”
That’s nice of him to say, but it’s frustrating to know that we still had a major chance of keeping him right up until the 11th hour.
People will blame it on the sanctions, and they certainly didn’t help us keep the defender at the club, but equally it seems like we were never in with a chance once Madrid made their intentions clear.
We have already started to move on from Rudiger, and there’s always the hope we sign someone ever better this summer, but it still stings, and will do for some time.
