The season is over, but there’s no rest for the international players, who have headed straight off for a gruelling 4 game run with their national teams.
Among them in Romelu Lukaku, who had the chance to get away from a difficult spell with Chelsea to link up with Belgium, where he has had a lot of success.
Sadly for him, just minutes in to their first Nations League game of the break, he picked up an injury.
It’s not too serious fortunately, and after an update on his fitness, his national team coach Roberto Martinez was able to talk a little about the striker’s situation at club level and why he’s struggled.
“He wants to be important and enjoy his football. I’m sure the decision in the summer will be the right one,” Martinez explained.
“In Belgium we are quite relaxed with Romelu’s situation. I know it is a big topic, but at the moment he is trying to recover from the injury and that’s the only thing he has in his mind. If he stays at Chelsea it will be for the right reasons. If he’s moving away it will be because everyone agrees to it.”
It’s in everyone’s interest to get Lukaku firing again, whether that’s at Chelsea or elsewhere. Martinez knows him well, and knows how to get the best out of him.
The problem is, it’s not really Chelsea’s job to make him be important. They spent important money on him to be important for them. Now it’s up to him to play like it.
