The England team that Gareth Southgate picked for yesterday’s game against Italy in the Nations League was not his first team – key men like Harry Kane were on the bench – but it was very much a team looking to the future.
Therefore it was, as you might expect, full of Chelsea academy graduates, representing the best production line of talent in the country over the last ten years.
Reece James started at right back, Fikayo Tomori in the middle, Mason Mount in midfield and Tammy Abraham up top. Declan Rice spent some years at Chelsea, and Marc Guehi, who came on as a sub, left the club last summer.
Sadly so many of these brilliant talents have been sold off already, but we’ll always have great affection for them, wherever they end up.
An England team of Cobham graduates is what we dream of, no matter where they’ve ended up.
