Chelsea seem well stocked at left back – Ben Chilwell is back from injury, Emerson Palmieri is back from his loan, and Marcos Alonso is still hanging around.
Ian Maatsen was another left back sent out on loan this season, where he impressed at Coventry. He should now be integrated into the first team picture, not shed like so many before him.
Rumours earlier in the week linked Maatsen with a return to his homeland of Holland to play for Feyenoord, but Chelsea must hold out against the temptation to cash in on another young talent.
The smart decision here is obvious – sell Alonso, keep Emerson, and promote Maatsen to third choice.
As we saw this year, that means he’s only one injury away from regular game time, and he can play plenty in the cups.
If he’s willing to accept that role for a year, it’s the move to make.
